“Butchering” by Rhina P. Espaillat, animated by Jim Avis

Jim Avis’s sensitive animation (and reading) of my comics interpretation by “Butchering,” by contemporary Dominican-American poet Rhina P. Espaillat. The comic, along with 23 other such graphic adaptations, can be found in my new book, Nature Poems to See By: A Comic Artist Interprets More Great Poetry (Plough Publishing, 2026).

“Sensitive” describes your illustration and Jim’s sequencing well. I feel there is a contrast between the beginning and the end. Yours and Jim’s choices stir me and have me “seeing” the poem long after I’ve watched the video and read the book. Thank you both.
