The new section of my comics adaptation of T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” is almost done and ready to go! I’ll be posting one page every week beginning immediately after Christmas, and I hope to begin work on the next section soon afterwards. I grow old, I grow old, time to get this finished!

After three years of studying comics in the context of completing my master’s degree in Art History, it’s gratifying to see that my own comics have themselves now occasionally become the object of academic interest. Last week at a conference in Hildesheim, Germany, on the subject of “The Translation and Adaptation of Comics,” Dr. Rike Bolte of the University of Osnabrück gave a presentation focusing on my adaptation of the poetry of Arthur Rimbaud, and in particular my interpretation of his poem “Sensations.” https://julianpeterscomics.com/sensations-by-arthur-rimbaud/

While I gather Dr. Bolte was not terribly well-disposed towards my approach in her presentation, I’m still very flattered that my comics have now become, in some small way, a subject for academic discussion, or perhaps even (dare I dream?) for academic condemnation.

Last August, I gave an interview to the Indian independent arts and culture magazine Eyezine. Now the people at Eyezine are organizing a feminist convention, titled “Hysteria”, to be held in Kolkata in January of 2015. A woman is raped every 32 minutes in India, and once almost every hour a woman there is murdered. Something has to be done about this grotesque state of affairs, and this conference aimed at promoting gender tolerance and identifying gender discrimination seems like an important step towards effecting change.

I’m pleased to announce that I am now putting the finishing touches on the pencil versions of 4 new pages of my adaptation of T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” and am about to begin inking. This upcoming section begins with the stanza containing the immortal lines “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons” and ends with Prufrock’s envisioning of himself as “a pair of ragged claws scuttling across the floors of silent seas.” Stay tuned!
Here is the complete version of my adaptation of an amazing poem by John Philip Johnson. The comic is to be included in a collection of graphic adaptations of Johnson’s work by various artists, for which I am also designing the cover.
