“God’s Grandeur” by Gerard Manley Hopkins, animated by Jim Avis and read by King Charles

A video interpretation by Jim Avis of my comics adaptation of Gerard Manley Hopkins’ “God’s Grandeur,” featuring a most distinguished and particularly well-enunciated reading by none other than His Royal Majesty, King Charles III.

The original comics adaptation, along with 23 others, can be found in my upcoming book, Nature Poems to See By: A Comic Artist Interprets More Great Poetry (Plough Publishing, 2026), now available for preorder.

  1. Unknown's avatar Anonymous says:

Similar (or same?) birds in the beginning and end, including what could be a phoenix (how appropriate) and/or Holy Spirit – clever.

The colour changes from nature, key technology, agriculture, forestry, industrialization and (what I see as) overpopulation are so effective. I like that when there are people, like the black and white crosswalk, I am encouraged to fill in the blanks. Great Gestalt task.

The graphics from foliage growing in the pavement, fiery earth, frothy ocean and natural reclamation – great depiction of cycles. The way you draw attention to the different aspects of the scenes – so effective.

Thank you for your art, Julian. Thank you, Jim, for this version
